Cartoon for the Sistine Chapel Ceiling #2
Marie Hines Cowan
72" x 72"
$10,000
Please email artist with inquiries.
Cartoon for the Sistine Chapel Ceiling #2 is part of a series of paintings where I take key scenes from Michelangelo’s work and open them up, making them more inclusive. My models for this series include various genders, sexes, races, and ages. I am also playing with a sort of Pop Art feel to the work by flattening the colors and backgrounds and having my figures decidedly modern. I use the word cartoon in the title as a play between this idea and because during the Renaissance, a cartoon was a preparatory drawing for a finished work.

My artistic process begins with a desire to understand “Universal energy”: how each of our consciousnesses explores visual forms. Two primary forms inhabit my work: Dots and Lines, which together evoke everything in the universe. Dots are atoms, cells, and stars. Lines are the continuity of life with endless human's elevated experiences. I believe, a Line is the extended form of a Dot, i try to observe this relationship in every dimension of our day to day life. All of my senses try to observe & identify those UNSEEN forms which is a completely non-verbal communication process across the surface. The interaction of dots, lines, colors, and patterns generate energy patterns, I seek to understand them with a metaphysical lens. I experience a sense of vibration across the multi-dimensional surface during this process. I am also interested in physical properties of color; viscosity & velocity, which provides a tactile surface experience that opens many interpretations about neurological hidden messages. Using light and sound with an artwork help to give these visual forms a supportive sensory stimulation.

I’ve drawn inspiration from my imagination, creating a series of sketches that were used on my canvases. I’ve incorporated groups of figures in these paintings to give a thought-provoking scale and imagery to the theme of “the color of rebellion”. My technique of using thick paint, dark and somewhat muted colors has not changed. The heavy textures and somber colors help set the mood for this work as they did for many of my other paintings.

As an artist, my way of resisting is through my art. This piece is part of a series depicting everyday people--people like youand I--with messages of resistance. I have been working in watercolor and cut paper, separately and together, for 10 years and I often use words in my work to create a juxtaposition between the mundane and a thought-provoking message.

I created this piece the day after the election results were announced. I recently asked my community how they felt after finding out that Trump had won. I received responses that not only gave me chills, but some that made me cry. I covered myself in blue handprints to represent everyone who voted for humanity and used red for the words to represent the hate this country chose instead. Thank you to everyone who shared their words with me. I hope this can help give you all a voice through my art. Our voices are stronger together and I only hope that my art will not only help raise them, but be a start to the change this country so desperately needs.

This work was created for a campaign by Amplifier asking artists to remix the American Flag in a way that represents their story and ideals. I believe we’ve been taught that America runs on principles of justice, liberty and freedom—but if you look closer those values mask privilege, exploitation and inequality. It’s time that we reveal every side of America and remember that until we acknowledge our underlying issues we cannot acknowledge what we claim to stand for.

Free the Light

Acrylic and Oil

This artwork represents a pivotal chapter from my childhood, reflecting the dark space I once found myself in, back in my home country. It was a time when societal constraints weighed heavily on me, and I yearned for freedom. In the painting, I envision myself as a light, yet I am shackled by the chains of societal restrictions — burdens of caste, color, creed, status, and tradition. The silver foil in the artwork symbolizes a ray of hope, like a silver lining that I chased relentlessly. It represents my journey of standing up for myself and fighting against the norms that bound me. Despite facing opposition from my family and society, I made the bold decision to defy the rules, determined to carve my own path and achieve something meaningful in life. I knew that breaking free would not be easy, but I was resolute in my belief that I could rise above, push past the limitations, and make everyone proud. The dark space in the painting is represented by black, symbolizing the weight and struggle of that period. The silver foil shines as a beacon of hope, while the red captures my rebellious spirit — the very essence of who I was and continue to be. And lastly, the yellow represents my inner shine, a symbol of the light that emerged from the darkness and continues to guide me forward. This painting is more than just colors on a canvas; it tells the story of resilience, rebellion, and the pursuit of self-empowerment against all odds.

Rebellion. Peaceful resolutions are the preferred outcome, encouraging social change. But there are times when this may not be the case and the blade is drawn. The Samurai Zen Master approaches life situations with a sharp mind as well as a sharp blade. Which one gets used depends upon the aggressor in certain situations. A ghostly image of the ancient sage Is visible among the elements depicted in the samurai’s silk kimono, with colorful dragons and geometric patterns. This artwork was inspired by Way of the Peaceful Warrior: A Book That Changes Lives by Dan Millman. The book is a spiritual saga exploring darkness and light. Similarly, the Samurai Zen Master knows yin yang principles are those of balance and harmony, influencing this artwork, illuminating pathways for the viewer.
